Stuart Fox’s body was spotted early next morning by a man out walking his dog. He had died of multiple stab wounds. His briefcase and wallet had gone, but, in the right-hand pocket of his waistcoat, the police found his laminated CPS security pass.

This discovery provoked a chorus of unsympathetic comments from the uniformed officers on the scene.

“Oh, CPS, is he? What a shame!”

“Not in the public interest to prosecute whoever’s done this, I’d say.”

“No, you’re right. The killer’s done the public a favour.”

“Yeah. One bastard less on the villains’ side.”

The officer appointed to head the investigation into Fox’s death suppressed a grimace of irritation. He understood that many of his officers resented the exercise by CPS lawyers of their powers to discontinue cases brought by the police, but this kind of hostility towards the CPS only made it harder for the two organisations to work together effectively. “Come on, lads,” he remonstrated with them. “Let’s just get on with it.” He wondered how on earth this CPS lawyer’s body had ended up in a children’s play area on Railton Road.
